Wellington City Tour — See the Capital With a Local Guide
Most visitors stick to the waterfront and Te Papa. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you’ll miss what makes Wellington one of the world’s coolest little capitals. This five-hour guided tour takes you from panoramic summits and colourful Victorian villas to behind-the-scenes film magic and craft beer straight from the source. Your guide is a Wellington local and French-trained chef who knows every hilltop, backstreet, and the best place to eat tonight.

Mount Victoria Lookout, 360° Views of the Capital
Standing at the summit of Mt Victoria, the entire city unfolds beneath you — the harbour, the hills to the west, the airport runway stretching into the sea, and on a clear day, the peaks of the South Island. It’s the perfect way to get your bearings and understand why Wellington is built the way it is. Your guide will point out landmarks you’ll visit later in the day, and share the stories behind what you’re seeing — from Māori legend to Lord of the Rings filming locations hidden in the pine forest below.
The Painted Ladies, Wellington's Colourful Victorian Villas
Wellington has its own Painted Ladies — rows of vibrant 19th-century Victorian and Edwardian villas clinging to the hillsides, their colours popping against the green. You’ll visit a famous, historic, family-owned example on the slopes of Mt Victoria and see the prominent row known as the “Seven Sisters” on Oriental Parade. Bring your camera — these are some of the most photographed houses in New Zealand.
The Wellington Sign & Miramar Peninsula
Perched on a hillside in Miramar, the Wellington Sign has become one of the capital’s most recognisable photo spots. You’ll stop here for pictures with panoramic views of the harbour and surrounding hills as your backdrop, before heading deeper into the peninsula, the neighbourhood Peter Jackson put on the map.
The Weta Cave, Behind the Scenes of Movie Magic
Step behind the scenes at the creative home of Weta Workshop in Miramar. You’ll peer through the windows of the Weta Cave and learn how the team behind The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar brings creatures, costumes, armour, and miniatures to life. Your guide will share insider stories about Wellington’s film industry that even most locals don’t know. Entry is included in your tour price.
Lunch at Puku Pies, A True Taste of Wellington
A Wellington institution. Puku Pies is known for handmade pies with flaky pastry and bold fillings: think jalapeño steak, paua, and even pavlova-inspired flavours. Founded by Jamie Williams, it’s the kind of place locals swear by and visitors never forget. Meals are at your own expense, but your guide will help you choose, and as a French-trained chef, he knows what’s good.
Garage Project Brewery, Craft Beer in Aro Valley
If your group’s keen (and most are), your guide will take you to the Garage Project Aro Cellar Door, a cosy, industrial-style taproom and bottle shop in a converted petrol station in Aro Valley. With eight or more rotating taps pouring experimental brews, including their Monthly Hazy IPA and the popular Hāpi Daze, it’s one of Wellington’s most-loved craft beer experiences. Pick up a roadie to take home. This stop is at your guide’s discretion, and a firm favourite with cruise ship visitors. Tastings and purchases at your own expense.
Wellington Cable Car, The Highlight of Any Visit
No trip to Wellington is complete without the Cable Car. In just five minutes you’ll ride from the city centre to the top of the Botanic Garden, where panoramic views of the harbour and the city skyline are waiting. At the top, visit the Cable Car Museum to see the original cars and winding machinery, and explore the Space Place Observatory. Your Cable Car ride is included in the tour.
Wellington Botanic Garden & Lady Norwood Rose Garden
Just a short walk from the Cable Car terminus, the Lady Norwood Rose Garden features 110 beds arranged in a formal geometric design, with colonnades on three sides and the Begonia House as a backdrop. If the season is right (November through April), it’s a stunning display. Your guide will decide whether conditions make this a worthwhile stop on the day.
Parliament Grounds & The Beehive
Visit Parliament House on Lambton Quay, home to New Zealand’s debating chamber, Speaker’s office, and committee rooms, and stand next to The Beehive, the iconic Executive Wing whose distinctive shape is recognised worldwide. A Category I heritage building, it has housed the offices of government ministers since 1979, including the Prime Minister’s office on the famous 9th floor. Your guide will bring the politics and the architecture to life.
Rainy Day Alternative, Old St Paul's
Wellington’s weather is famously unpredictable, so your guide has an indoor alternative ready if conditions turn. Old St Paul’s is a stunning Gothic Revival church renowned for its exquisite native timber interiors and vibrant stained-glass windows, a hidden gem that most visitors walk right past.

We can pick you up directly from your hotel, the cruise terminal, or even the airport as part of your tour package. Wherever you’re arriving from, we make the start of your Wellington experience easy and stress-free.
Free Airport Pickup for Private Tour Guests
If you book your private tour directly through this website, we’ll include a complimentary airport transfer to your hotel — a simple, stress-free start to your time in Wellington.
Complimentary airport transfer applies to all private tour bookings made through this website. Valid for transfers to any hotel within 8 km of Wellington CBD. Additional passengers not included in the tour may be transferred for $30 per person.
How long is the tour?
The shared tour runs approximately five hours. Private tours can be tailored to your schedule with half-day or full-day options available.
Is this suitable for cruise ship passengers?
Absolutely. We meet cruise guests at the Wellington Cruise Terminal with a signboard and have you back with time to spare. We know the ship schedules and build the tour around your port time.
What if the weather is bad?
Wellington is famous for its wind, but that’s part of the character. We operate rain or shine, and some of the most dramatic views happen on moody Wellington days. If conditions call for it, your guide will swap in an indoor stop like Old St Paul’s church.
Can you cater to dietary requirements?
Yes. Your guide is a French-trained chef, and food is central to everything he does. Let him know your requirements when you book and he’ll take care of it. Kosher options are always available.
What about the Garage Project stop?
This is at your guide’s discretion and depends on the group’s interest and the day’s timing. It’s a very popular stop, especially with cruise ship visitors, but if beer isn’t your thing, your guide will use that time at another location instead.
How do I meet my Kosher Tours guide when I arrive at the Port of Wellington?
Cruise Ship GuestsIt’s simple! When you disembark, please do not board the ship’s shuttle. Kosher Tours has a dedicated meeting area at the Port of Wellington, and one of our friendly guides will greet you as you come down the gangway. Just look out for our Kosher Tours sign—we’ll find you.
Why shouldn't I take the shuttle?
Cruise Ship GuestsThe ship’s shuttle will take you to a general drop-off point in the city. By meeting us directly at the port, you skip the crowds, avoid the wait and get straight into your private Kosher Tours experience without any fuss.
What if I can't find my guide?
Cruise Ship GuestsDon’t worry—our guides will be clearly visible at our designated meeting point at the port. If you can’t locate your guide, please call or message us at +64 027 5858382, and we will come straight to you.
Do I need to do anything in advance?
